Nicholas J. Talley

Nicholas J. Talley, MD, PhD

Nicholas J. Talley, MD, PhD, is Chair of Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He holds the rank of Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. In addition, he has joint appointments in the Divisions of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Epidemiology in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. In the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine he also holds the rank of Professor of Epidemiology. He was formerly Director of the Motility Interest Group in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. He received his medical degree from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and his PhD from the University of Sydney, Australia.

Dr. Talley is currently editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Gastroenterology and serves on a number of prominent editorial boards. He is a founding member of the Rome Foundation, and he has been heavily involved in developing international diagnostic criteria and in designing clinical trials in the area of functional GI disorders. He is a past President of the Functional Brain-Gut Research Group, was a counselor in the AGA Motility Section, and serves as a member of the Board of the American College of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Talley's research is primarily focused on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of the luminal gut; in particular, functional GI disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and Helicobacter pylori. He also has an interest in eosinophilic diseases of the gut. He has published over 500 original and review articles in the peer-reviewed literature, and he is considered one of the leading authorities in clinical research on dyspepsia and the irritable bowel syndrome. He currently has NIH funding as Principal Investigator evaluating the pathophysiology and pharmacogenomics of antidepressant therapy in functional dyspepsia.
